Microsoft Identity Manager 2016 for user management

  • Client is a school district of 40 schools, which each enroll from 15 to 1300 students. There are 16000 active students and 1200 teachers.

  • Was using NETIQ IDM to manage the identity of all its users. NETIQ provides the provisioning and deprovisioning of accounts to Active Directory, managing Role Based Access Control and bulk user communication via groups


Problem Statement

  • The adoption of Office 365 as the cloud product for provides free access to Microsoft Identity Manager 2016 which makes it cheaper than NETIQ.

  • There are significant gaps in the ability of NETIQ to manage identity

  • NETIQ does not have a friendly GUI where non-technical people can manage their own identity.

  • NETIQ does not have the ability to manage elevated account access.

Implemented Solution

  • Worked with client IDM team to understand the current environment and their desired end state.

  • Performed gap analysis of the current state and defined a Business requirements statement for the project

  • Designed and Architected IAM solution based on Microsoft Identity Manager 2016

  • Developed extension rules for MIM 2016 using C#

  • Developed workflows in MIM 2016 to perform tasks on the users Identity in Active Directory (AD) based on HR events.

  • Analyzed currently criteria-based groups in NETIQ and AD.

  • Developed criteria-based groups in MIM 2016 to replace the NETIQ groups.

  • Prepared IAM solution usage guide, release notes, deployment guide, test reports, test plans to satisfy use cases.

  • Achieved better compliance and governance in place by deploying the well-designed IDM solution satisfying business, technical and auditors requirements

  • Identity Lifecycle Management was implemented in Production based on complex business rules

  • Using MIM 2016, the client could define better Access and Entitlement Certification
